A new study investigated the effects of 8 weeks of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with or without creatine supplementation on symptoms of depression (PMID: 39488067). 100 men & women (50 of each) were randomized to either a group doing CBT + creatine (5g creatine monohydrate per day) or CBT + placebo. After 8 weeks both treatments reduced symptoms of depression, but the group taking creatine had significantly better outcomes, by a pretty decent margin
The researchers used a validated questionnaire called a PHQ-9 to measure depression severity. A score of equal to or more than 5 indicates depression. 5-9 is considered mild depression, 10-14 is moderate, 15-20 is moderate-severe, and equal to or more than 20 is considered severe depression. The average starting score was 17.6 & 17.8 for the placebo & creatine groups respectively (not statistically different). After 8 weeks the average score in the placebo group was 11.9. The average score in the creatine group was 5.8! ????
Now, this is just one 8 week study so we need to be cautious with how much weight we give to it. Still, this is in line with other research on creatine indicating various cognitive improvements with creatine (PMID: 39070254).
