Who wouldn’t like to get their hands on a naturally occurring combination of substances that act as an antioxidant, an immune system booster, and a detoxifier … a combination that can help your body repair damage caused by stress, pollution, radiation, disease, infection, drugs, poor diet, aging, injury, trauma, and burns?
We have to have two key substances in our bodies for optimal energy and health: Mitochondria & Glutathione.
Most people are born with an abundance of both, but levels diminish as we age. In addition to the natural aging process, stress, disease and chemical toxins also use up glutathione reserves. Therefore, the onus is on the individual to minimize depletion while supporting production. Doing so is well worth the effort, considering the alternative. When mitochondria are damaged, or reduced in number, the effects of aging and disease are evidenced as fatigue, pain, neurological disorders, poor immune response, and reduced mental clarity. You may already be familiar with the terms, free radicals, oxidative stress, and inflammation. Free radicals necessitate the anti-oxidative effects of glutathione to prevent mitochondrial damage and mutations to its DNA. Yes, mitochondria have their own DNA.
Unfortunately, glutathione (pronounced “gloota-thigh-own”), can’t always keep up with the demand, which leads to a surplus of free radicals and the damaging consequences mentioned above.
Mitochondria, Glutathione and Disease
While the number of mitochondria in the body is estimated in the quadrillions, there will always be a percentage that are damaged. Typically damage goes unnoticed until a threshold is reached and symptoms appear. Glutathione’s role is to prevent damage or cell death from happening. The importance of glutathione’s function is illustrated in the fact that every organ system in the body has diseases associated with reduced levels. When levels are low, mitochondria function is impaired; conversely, impaired mitochondria compromise glutathione.
The bi-lateral nature of the relationship has been suggested as a cause for progressive decline in mitochondrial disorders.
Though best known for making energy, mitochondria also have other important functions, including cell signaling and DNA replication. It is clear impaired mitochondrial DNA and cell signaling play a role in neurological and muscular disorders, as well as tumor growth and disease. Scientists are still investigating the complexities and the effects of dysfunction; including why some individuals experience mitochondrial syndromes and others do not.

GLUTATHIONE: How it works
Produced primarily in the liver, glutathione kills free radicals, boosts immunity and is the body’s chief detoxifying agent. If the liver isn’t functioning well, glutathione production suffers and toxins build up. The body produces glutathione from three amino acids (cysteine, glutamine and glycine). Although it is the most abundant antioxidant, additional antioxidants that we eat are important too. For instance, vitamins C and E help recycle glutathione. Research shows people with higher vitamin C levels also have higher glutathione levels. Most adults would benefit from an increase and based on the following list it’s easy to see why. Causes of reduced glutathione include,
• Chronic illness
• Environmental toxins
• Genetics
• Medications
• Aging
• Stress
• Alcohol
• Smoking
• Poor diet
• Nutrient deficiencies

THE MASTER – Glutathione
What is it? I’m talking about the mother of all antioxidants, the master detoxifier and maestro of the immune system: Glutathione.
The vast majority of individuals with chronic ill health (chronic fatigue, autoimmune illnesses, autism, diabetes, chronic infections, cancers, liver disease, kidney disease, asthma, heart disease, Parkinson’s disease, etc) all have low levels functionally of glutathione. Your body produces its own glutathione, but toxins from poor diets, pollution, toxins, aging, infections, radiation, stress, medications all take a toll and deplete your body of this necessary molecule. As your body ages the level of Antioxidants — the most well-known of which are vitamins C and E — are important for good health because they neutralize free radicals, which can build up in cells and cause damage.
Because Glutathione exists within the cells, it is in a prime position to neutralize free radicals. It also has potentially widespread health benefits because it can be found in all types of cells, including the cells of the immune system, whose job is to fight disease.
The best studies of Glutathione have been conducted in cancer patients. One study involved women with ovarian cancer who were being treated with chemotherapy. Some of the women were also treated with intravenous Glutathione. Those given the Glutathione not only had fewer side effects from the chemotherapy but also had better overall survival rates.
What Does Glutathione Do?
The strong antioxidant properties of Glutathione help keep cells running smoothly. It also helps the liver remove chemicals that are foreign to the body, such as drugs and pollutants. Evidence for the important role that Glutathione plays in health comes from studies of people who are severely ill. Lab results from patients hospitalized with cancer, AIDS, or other very serious diseases, almost invariably indicate they are depleted in Glutathione. The specific reasons for this continue to be explored, however it is recognized that Glutathione is extremely important for maintaining intracellular health.
It is well known that aging is accompanied by a precipitous fall in glutathione levels. Lower glutathione levels are implicated in many diseases associated with aging including cataracts, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s atherosclerosis and others. — Journal of Clinical Epidemiology 47:1021-26, 1994.
Raised glutathione levels fight the oxidation of fats circulating in the bloodstream including cholesterol, retarding the process of plaque formation in the arteries leading to most heart attacks and strokes. — Nutrition Reviews 54: 1-30, 1996
Autoimmune Diseases – Re-Balance Your Immune System With Glutathione
Should you be afraid to boost your glutathione levels? Many have expressed concern that if their immune system is already overactive, raising glutathione will only make it worse.
Studies have shown just the opposite to be true. In a normal healthy functioning immune system there are optimal levels of all its components, like white blood cells, different types of T-cells, B-cells, and so forth. What glutathione does is make sure that you maintain these optimal levels.
There are also little “scouts” that your immune system sends out that are used to tell your body whether a tissue is friend or foe. These little scouts are called cytokines. Cytokines cause inflammation, which is why many of these autoimmune diseases are known for their inflammation. Glutathione keeps the cytokines honest, so they stop tagging good guys as bad guys. They only tag bad guys bad, and good guys good, so that your killer cells only end up destroying what should be destroyed.
So basically glutathione knows what to do and gets busy doing it, correcting whatever imbalance a person may have, whether they are immuno-deficient, or have one of the autoimmune diseases.
In conclusion, we know that there are two conditions that must be addressed when it comes to autoimmune diseases – oxidative stress and re-balancing the immune system. Glutathione effectively addresses both roles to help to combat autoimmune diseases.
Here is a small number of health challenges connected to low glutathione levels:
ADD, addictions, AIDS, allergies, Alzheimer’s, Arthritis, Asthma, autism, Balding, Bronchitis, Cancer, Cataracts, Chronic Fatigue, cirrhosis, Diabetes, Fibromyalgia, Hair Loss, Insomnia, Low energy, Low sex drive, Lupus, Male infertility, Migraines, Multiple Sclerosis, Osteoporosis, Pain (back, knee, joint, etc.), Parkinson’s Poor Eyesight, PMS, Psoriasis, Scleroderma, “Senior Moments, Wrinkles, and many more..
How Should Glutathione Be Taken?
Until the creation of Gluta-SOD Cream, Glutathione had been unable to be directly administered in an easy, effective, and direct manner. Glutathione is NOT absorbed orally unless it is in the reduced form (which we also carry in our office, intravenous administration is undesirably invasive, and, until now, the Glutathione molecule was not capable of being absorbed through the skin. In the past, the most practical solution had been to take its precursors (Amino acids: N-acetyl-cysteine, glutamate, & glycine) — that is, the molecules the body needs to make Glutathione — rather than Glutathione itself.
Now, with the development of Gluta-SOD Cream, that is no longer the case! What Is Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) and What Does It Do?
Superoxide Dismutase is an enzyme that repairs cells and reduces the damage done to them by superoxide, the most common free radical in the body. SOD is found in both the dermis and the epidermis and is key to the production of healthy fibroblasts (skin-building cells).
Studies have shown that SOD acts as both an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory in the body, neutralizing the free radicals that can lead to wrinkles and precancerous cell changes.
Researchers are currently studying the potential of superoxide dismutase as an anti-aging treatment since it is now known that SOD levels drop while free radical levels increase as we age.
Superoxide Dismutase also helps the body use zinc, copper, and manganese.
Superoxide Dismutase has also been used to treat arthritis, prostate problems, corneal ulcers, burn injuries, inflammatory diseases, inflammatory bowel disease, and long-term damage from exposure to smoke and radiation, and to prevent side effects of cancer drugs. In its topical form, it may help to reduce facial wrinkles, scar tissue, heal wounds and burns, lighten dark or hyper-pigmented skin, and protect against harmful UV rays.
How Should Superoxide Dismutase Be Taken?
As with Glutathione, there is no evidence that Superoxide Dismutase products that are taken by mouth are absorbed by the body. Injectable (shot) forms of Superoxide Dismutase that have been used in clinical studies appear to be safe but invasive and painful AND expensive. Gluta-SOD Cream provides the perfect transport system for this vital antioxidant.
GLUTATHIONE/SOD & Heart Disease
A NEW REPORT IN the Journal of Clinical Investigation adds to the ever-increasing evidence that immunological mechanisms “play an important role in atherogenesis (the beginning of heart disease). These new observations suggest the involvement of IgE antibodies in the promotion of atherosclerosis and specifically in plaque instability and clinical events.” Food and other allergies contribute to the inflammation of cardiovascular disease. The clinical report goes on to state, “the report by Wang et al and other reports describing the potential importance of mast cells to cardiovascular disease have provided a compelling case to study the role of IgE in inflammatory conditions in the body. It adds to the growing evidence of the importance of immune function in heart disease.”
Bottom line: in clinical management of cardiovascular disease the autoimmune components should be further investigated with a rational treatment strategy!”
Inflammation & Autoimmune disease
Autoimmune disorders occur when the immune system mistakes body cells for harmful invaders, such as bacteria, and attacks them.
Autoimmune disorders can destroy body tissues, cause abnormal organ growth, and/or impair organ function. An allergy, also called a hypersensitivity reaction, occurs when the immune system overreacts to a substance (allergen) that is normally harmless. Examples of allergens include mold, pollen, animal dander, and dust mites. When a person has allergies, the white blood cells produce an antibody called immunoglobulin E (IgE) in response to one or more allergens. This antibody attaches to the allergen, triggering other immune cells to release chemicals that cause allergic symptoms, such as runny nose, watery eyes, and hives.
It has been found that hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s disease of the thyroid are directly related to chronic inflammation. Keeping the IgE antibodies in contrl along with glutathione/SOD supplementation is vital to controlling further destruction in the body and allows the immune system to get back to normal.
How Do I Increase Glutathione Levels?
Most experts agree intake of nutrients supporting glutathione production is the way to go. Typically, Americans eat only a small fraction of the glutathione-producing constituents the body needs. To circumvent digestive interferences, glutathione is available intravenously, as well as in liposomal formulations. Below are boosters for glutathione (which are better known as ways to support liver detoxification).
• Eat sulfur and antioxidant-rich foods: asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, spinach, garlic, onions, avocado, squash, melons, and peaches
• Exercise, but don’t over-train
• Yoga
• Reduce stress
• Get sufficient sleep
• Use GLUTA-SOD cream daily
